The grape yields in the 2008 vintage were relatively lower than normal, thus producing wines with more depth, extraction and flavors. This Petite is a great example of the varietal’s potential: abundant avors and aromas of blackberries, blueberries, plums and white pepper. This vineyard is planted on the hilly east end of the Russian River Valley. Judicious use of French oak barrels only amplifies the varietal character without obstructing it. The meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard and great terroir produced near perfect fruit. The wine is a great example of Pinot Noir, known for its intriguing and seductive nuances of cherry fruit, wild berries, rose petals and spices.

The 100% Tempranillo 1996 Cuvee Campanario represents a blend of the finest parcels of Tempranillo. The wine was aged in 100% new French Limousin oak for 16 months, then bottled without filtration. It reveals a saturated purple color, and is more backward both aromatically and on the palate, as well as more impressive. The wine's bouquet falls in the black fruit spectrum of aromas - blackberries, black raspberries, and overripe cherries. Full-bodied and tightly-knit, with intriguing mineral notes, this powerful, rich, layered wine could easily pass for a top-class Bordeaux in a blind tasting. The result of 28 days of maceration, the high tannin is sweet and well-integrated in the wine's framework. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2019

Remarkably, the 2005 Shiraz Reserve is even better than the Autograph. It spent 14 months in new oak, 60% French and 40% American. It, too, coats the glass with a thick purple film. Purple/black, it gives up a splendid perfume of cedar, Asian spices, pepper, violets, bacon, blueberry, and blackberry. On the palate the wine is dense and plush, admirably combining elegance and power. There are gobs of sweet blue and black fruits, ripe tannins, and a pure, 60-second finish. Give it 3-4 years to blossom and drink it through 2025.

Made from a 120-year-old dry-farmed vineyard (one of Australia's oldest vineyards), this classic effort possesses a European like structure. Fashioned by winemaker Reid Bosward it was aged in French oak casks of which one third were new. This full-bodied, inky/purple-hued Shiraz exhibits notes of lead pencil shavings, smoke, champhor, black currants and blackberries. With great purity, stature, and intensity as well as full body, and surprising definition and length, it requires 3-4 years of cellaring; it should age for 12-15 years. The pricing is bold, but how often do you get to taste a compelling wine from 120-year-old vines?
